National Certificate in Christian Youth Work
Engage – is an accessible and flexible training course designed for people doing youth work full time, part time or in their spare time. The course is an exciting combination of practical, innovative and theoretical youth work, with opportunities for youth workers to share good practice at group training days.
Engage! is accredited through the National Open College Network at Level 3. Learners gain credits and a professional qualification as a Youth Support Worker (recognised and endorsed by the National Youth Agency). As well as equipping learners for youth work, the professional qualification may mean that learners could be paid at a higher rate if employed by a local authority.
Engage! can also be accessed at Level 2 also accredited by the Open College Network, which is equivalent to GCSE level.
Training days for Engage! are available at Venues around the country. The course comprises six Units, each one with a Teaching Day (mainly Saturdays). There is a handbook and online learning resource to help learners complete each Unit.
Engage! Units cover areas of expertise such:
- Working with the Core Values of Youth Work

- Building and Sustaining Relationships with Young People
- Enabling Young People to Work effectively in Groups
- Enabling Young People to Organise and take Responsibility for Activities Events and Projects
- Working with Young People to Safeguard their Welfare
Each learner will need a ‘placement’ where they are able to work with young people aged 13 – 19. The placement should be able to provide supervision, require a Criminal Records Bureau Enhanced Disclosure and ensure that learners have completed between 12 – 24 hours of practical youth work for each Unit.
